The SU Alumni Association Metro Manila Chapter Inc. (SUAAMMCI) successfully conducted an Overseas Job Fair at the Hibbard Hall and Alumni Hall Grounds of Silliman University in Dumaguete last 21-22 August. Four top performing Manila-based recruitment agencies joined the two-day Job Fair, which was included among the official events that commemorated the 108th SU Founders Day celebration.
The POEA-accredited firms made available decent and productive land- and sea-based overseas employment opportunities to new graduates and other jobseekers in Dumaguete. These agencies were chosen by SUAAMMCI because of their proven track record of providing just wages and welfare protection to their recruited workers.
The agencies were: LEAD Resources Management Corporation, Emerald International Manpower Services Corporation, Peridot International Resources Incorporated, and JJ Crewing Corporation. LEAD Resources is a consistent recipient of the Top Performer Award from POEA, while Emerald International is the country's leading company that deploys Filipino workers for top Singapore healthcare providers.
Among the job vacancies that were offered included those for staff nurses and assistant nurses for Singapore, hotel and restaurant personnel, skilled and semi-skilled workers, professionals and office staff for Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, household service workers for Hong Kong and Cyprus, and overseas job openings for seafarers.
Conducted in cooperation with the SU Career and Placement Office (CPO), the Overseas Job Fair sought to provide access to overseas employment not only to Silliman graduates but also to the public at-large, in the hope of giving them informed employment options abroad.
Treasurer Gloria PiƱero-Belarmino was on hand to represent SUAAMMCI. According to Dr. Vangie Aguilan, Director of the SU CPO, there were 105 jobseekers who registered for the Job Fair, 43 of whom were SU graduates. A total of 75 applicants qualified for various job openings, and are awaiting final interview by foreign principal employers. (Mitch P. Duran)
